This is one of London's famous ceremonial arches, it was designed in 1825 as a triumphal entrance to Buckingham Palace from the corner of Hyde Park. The top of the arch is crowned with an magnificent sculpture depicting Peace descending on the Chariot of War, below from its viewing platforms there are exceptional views of London's parks and dramatic skyline.
For the first time in all its long history Wellington Arch is open to the public, inside fascinating exhibitions tell of its history and inception. The arch also provides visitors with an ideal vantage point to see the mounted Horse Guards as they pass between its majestic columns each day.
Decimus Burton designed the arch, interestingly in 1846 a large statue of the Duke of Wellington on horse-back was erected on top of the arch without the consent of Burton. This remained there until 1882 when a road widening scheme called for the arch to be dismantled and moved to its present site looking down Constitutional Hill. Only then did the opportunity arise to remove the overlarge statue of the Duke to a more suitable site in Aldershot, home of the British Army, where it has remained ever since. Later, in 1912, this wonderful neo-classical arch was finally completed with the superb sculpture we see today.
